WHY CRYODECK The traditional method of constructing an insulation Deck is by welding the deck together and then suspending the deck from the roof. Often the insulation deck is constructed by welding together various components of the deck at ground level and once complete using air blowers to float the outer roof into position with the deck attached. Aluminium and Stainless Steel are commonly used materials for construction of insulation decks. This traditional construction method has many dis-advantages: Schedule The time required to construct a welded deck is very time consuming as the deck must be welded together at the work site and welding can be a rather difficult process as aluminium is generally considered the most difficult alloy to weld. Stainless steel alloys are also difficult to weld in comparison to other carbon steel alloys. Skilled Requirements Due to critical welding process the construction of such a deck requires skilled welders, which increase the cost and time of construction. Since the deck must be completed and attached to the outer roof prior to the air lifting of the outer roof to the top of the tank, the deck assembly is often on the critical path of the project. Material Cost Welding together the insulation deck may also have an adverse affect on the strength of the insulation deck. Welding process reducing the strength of the aluminium. In order to compensate for the decrease in strength, often the thickness of the welded aluminium deck must be increased thus increasing the cost and weight of the deck. Further, the increased weight of the deck increases the number and size of the supports suspending the insulation deck from the roof of the outer.
